Guy Laramee‘s works are inspired by a fascination with ‘progress’ in society. The ‘progress’ that moves along the lines of saying the book is dead, libraries are becoming obsolete and technology is the only way for the future. In his own words;

“Do we really believe that “new technologies” will change anything concerning our existential dilemma, our human condition? And even if we could change the content of all the books on earth, would this change anything in relation to the domination of analytical knowledge over intuitive knowledge? What is it in ourselves that insists on grabbing, on casting the flow of experience into concepts?”

Sight from Sight Systems on Vimeo.

Below we have a video from the Google Glasses project, these developments are not as far away as people may suspect. It looks like Google Glasses may be released publicly in 2014. Does this mean we will be living in the sci-fi future in 2 short years? Of course one of the possible down-sides could be in some way related to Google’s main revenue source; making money from advertising. This could be Google’s attempt to monetise your eyeballs by zapping an ad to your eye every time you look at something..

Sci-fi from 1995, a la the film Strange Days, could possibly be a reality in 2014, does this mean we are creating ever more brilliant technology exponentially or that script writers in 1995 were not far off the mark in their sci-fi effort( a hacker called Nero, anyone?). I will admit Strange Days is no classic by any means, but damn, there was something so 90′s futuristic about Mini Discs! The film’s tagline, ‘An extreme taste of reality’, yet Google Glasses means in a way removing yourself from what’s going on around you,(contradiction in terms, as you are also analysing your surroundings more indepthly) is this more reality or less? Or simply redefining individual appreciation of/interaction with reality? You decide.

‘A street map made up of over 900 film titles including cinema classics such as Lost Highway, On the Waterfront, Jurassic Park, Reservoir Dogs, Carlito’s Way, Nightmare on Elm Street, Valley of the Dolls and Chinatown.

The Map, which is loosely based on the style of a vintage Los Angeles street map has its own Hollywood Boulevard and includes districts dedicated to Hitchcock and Cult British Horror movies. Like most cities it also has its own Red Light area. There’s an A-Z key at the base of the Map listing all the films featured with their release dates and names of the directors.’

The Eixample , (Catalan for ‘extension’) is a district of Barcelona between the old city (Ciutat Vella) and what were once surrounding small towns (Sants, Gràcia, Sant Andreu etc.), constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

It is known for the urban planning that divided the district into octagonal blocks. Influenced by a range of schools of architecture, Eixample was designed in a grid pattern with long streets, wide avenues, and rounded street corners. Despite being in the center of a thriving European metropolis, the district provides improved living conditions for inhabitants including extensive sun light, improved ventilation, and more open green space for public use. The vista of the grid-like structure is amazing from above:

Kelly Pavan, is a gifted young French producer, Two-piece act Of Norway is Vegard “Lil’” Wolf Dyvik & Christian Steenstrup. Together they have created a monster in this remix for Kelly.

and because it’s Saturday and as it’s only once in a blue moon a Daft Punk remix comes along, which proves that the risk can indeed be worth taking for both the artist and the listener. Check out the song below and more of Cherokee here.
